AFRICAN TRAVELERS (First broadcast September 8, 2004):

For this film, I focused upon the overall emotional dynamic and rhythm of the scenes and the mystery, the danger of the Swedes settling in Africa for the first time. Finally, I wanted to create the sense of shared humanity that perhaps will become a reality with the break down of apartheid. Throughout the project, I had excellent communication with Film Editor, Kersti Grunditz.

Director/Writer, Marika Griehsel was the Swedish Television’s South African correspondent during the height of the movement that led to the end of apartheid. This documentary explores the emigrants who left Sweden in the 1860’s, settled in South Africa, prospered as industrialists, and their descendants who were/are major figures in the in anti-apartheid movement. It also examines the rather darker side of this Swedish emigration movement: the fact that many Swedes returned from South Africa with South African, black, servants. Special thanks to Ze'ev Lipan for the Hebrew text and Hannah Yoken for the English text in the Ending Titles.
